TreeHouse Foods Inc has voluntarily recalled various frozen waffle products after discovering potential contamination issues of Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous organism, after routine testing.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a species of pathogenic bacteria that has the potential to cause a disease called listeriosis, a serious illness posing significant risks to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and others with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women are particularly at risk, as listeriosis can result in miscarriage or stillbirth. Healthy individuals may still suffer high fevers, nausea and severe headaches, among other things. Notably, it is possible for L. monocytogenes to survive and grow under refrigeration and food preservation methods.
The recalled products were distributed throughout the United States and Canada under various brand names and packaging. Affected brands include names such as Publix, Great Value and Kodiak Cakes- among others. A comprehensive list of the recalled products, along with their Lot Codes and UPCs, can be found at the PR Newswire site linked below.
Consumers are urged to check their freezers and discard any recalled products or return them to the place of purchase. For further information, customers may contact TreeHouse Foods at 800-596-2903, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (CST).
